May 31, 09 - KORHS - Liberty, KY

Round 4 of the KORHS series was in Liberty, KY. It was about a 3 hour drive from Cincinnati which meant leaving around 6 am from the house. I’m kind of getting use to the alarm clock going off before the sun comes up since I’ve been co-oping with Duke Energy during the week and I’ve been racing every weekend since February. I’ve definitely been hitting it pretty hard lately and it’s awesome to see my results start to come around.

I walked the first mile or so in case I got a bad start so I would know where I could make some passes. This really didn’t work too well since my bike didn’t start till the third kick. I caught back up to everyone as we were going up the hill after the start. I think I’ve been rushing myself off the start lately and I make a lot of mistakes trying to make up time too quickly, so I tried to hang back and wait for some mistakes so I could pass. The first lap was really crazy, Curtis Ryan stalled his bike in the first creek section, then Nathan Alering got hung up on a log in the same creek and allowed Alan Westerfield to get by. Nate dawg straightened her out quickly and I jumped in behind him and Alan.

We stayed like this for a mile or two before Nate decided to turn left when the track went right and I got by him just before the first field section. I could see Alan pretty just in front of me so I held her wide and hoped for the best. I made the pass before the check and led for a mile or two until we got to the really slick creek section. In the riders meeting Rick warned us that the creek was super slick so I thought I was ready. The beginning part of the slick creek had a bunch of loose rocks and I thought to myself “Hey this isn’t so bad, you can go pretty fast through here.” Well the creek made a right around a bend and over a small log just as my bike started to slide, the next thing I knew I was sliding through the creek on my butt with my bike going faster than me! I picked the bike back up, soaking wet, and tried to make up some time since everyone went back by me. I caught back up and tried to make a pass and ended up getting hung up in a ditch, Alering caught back up and we started to hammer down.

Then I got the pit board from my dad that Alan was 45 seconds ahead of us so I knew we had some time to make up. Nate and I were charging super hard, we finally caught up to Alan in a field section and me and Nate were wide open.

The next lap I started to open up a little lead and gave myself some breathing room before getting the checkered flag and coming away with my second overall win!

I’d really like to thank my Dad and ProMotoBillet/Fastway, Moose Racing, Beechmont Motorsports, Johnny Signs, SixSixOne, and IMS.

round 6

May 3, 2009 - GNCC Round 6 - Lafayette, TN

The sixth round of the GNCC series was held in Lafayette, Tennessee and it was another muddy race. They were calling for 2-3 inches of rain Sunday alone! The pits were horrible and 4X4 trucks were getting stuck everywhere. We ended up pulling into the track and heading off to the left, I had the van matted out trying not to get stuck. We were going about 50 mph through a field trying to get on top of a ridge so we could just coast back out after the race.

The weather ended up holding out a little on Sunday and it was just misting during the race but the track was already destroyed. They ended up cutting the afternoon race down to 2 hours so that they wouldn’t be towing people out all night.

The race didn’t seem to start out too well for me. I was sitting on the line and XC2 was just heading into the first turn and my roll-offs broke. I didn’t have time to get another set of goggles so my dad just pulled out all the film. I still got the holeshot but Chase Bishop and Ted Mullins went by me a couple turns later. Chase ended up crashing in the field section and Ted was stuck behind him. I went by them both and led for a while before following Ted for a couple miles.

The track was fun for a mud race, lots of ruts and some sticky dirt made the conditions decent. Their weren’t that many hills so you would think getting stuck would be kind of hard, but the worst section of the track seemed to be at the finish line. The ruts were so deep I even got stuck one lap, I couldn’t get the bike out, but props to Bryce Gartman for helping me get it out.

I got my best finish of the year with a 3rd place and 29th overall!

Id really like to thank ProMotoBillet/Fastway, Moose Racing, Beechmont Motorsports, Johnny Signs, SixSixOne, and IMS.

kohrs round 2

April 2009 - KOHRS series - round 2

With the temperature near 80 this weekend, this was the first really hot race of the season and a good test to see where I stand with my fitness; I also decided to ride the Pro class for the first time. Driving down the winding road heading to the track I could tell there was going to be some big hills and I figured the track was going to be pretty technical. We backed the van in right next to the track to pit.

As my dad was unloading my bike I signed up and walked the first mile or two of the track as always. I’m not very fast right out of the gate and I’ve been trying to work on this by checking out the first part of the track every weekend.

The race ended up starting at noon since the signup line was so long, I was fine with this, it gave me some more time to check out some of the creek sections.

Noon finally rolled around and I headed to the line, I was surprised to see Nathan Alering there since his bike has been broke all winter!  My Beechmont Motorsport YZ250F started first kick and got me off to a great start. I tried to ride as fast as I could, charging into the corners in order to open up a little lead. I could hear Michels and Alering behind me while we were charging up and down the hills.

The second lap the track seemed totally different, it was wore in a little and I could attack certain sections a little easier, I also remembered where I could just hold it on through some of the open parts in the woods.

I ended up leading all day! It was awesome I was having so much fun, the track was amazing, the dirt was perfect. The uphills were awesome too! Once the checkered flag came out I won my first overall and took the Pro class win! Thanks KORHS for putting on an awesome race and one of the best tracks I have ridden and also my dad for going with my every weekend.

Id really like to thank ProMotoBillet/Fastway, Moose Racing, Beechmont Motorsports, Johnny Signs, SixSixOne, and IMS.

OMA 09 Rnd 1

April 11, 2009 OMA Round #1

The first round of the OMA series was held in Nashville, Tennessee. I few days early tornados had ripped through the area only 20 minutes from the track. I thought for sure it was going to be a mud race but the track conditions turned out to be perfect Sunday morning.

I got an unusual horrible start. The bike wouldn’t start on the line and I was almost dead last going into the first turn of the A row. The track was super tight and much more technical than I’m use to so I thought I was going to have a tough time getting past people but I managed to come around the first lap as the 8th or so A rider.

As the day went on I continued to make some bad decisions and crash. On the 5th lap I buried it in a deep rut and had to wait a couple minutes for some help to pick the bike out. I continued to charge until the checkered flag and ended up with a win in Lite A and 20th overall. I’m pretty pumped especially after thinking I had such a horrible day.

Id really like to thank ProMotoBillet/Fastway, Moose Racing, Beechmont Motorsports, Johnny Signs, SixSixOne, and IMS.

09 Big Buck

April 5th GNCC Round #4

The first 4th round of the GNCC series was held in Union, South Carolina for the Big Buck. I was sitting 4th in the points and wasn’t really reaching my goals that I had set for the season.

I got off to a decent start, and ended up passing a few people before entering the woods in 3rd. At around the 6 mile mark I hit a hole before a downhill pretty hard and the bike sent me over the bars down the hill. I ended up in a small creek with the bike on top of me. I picked the bike off and got going again. I put my head down and started to charge. I wanted to be top 5.

I came around the first lap in 11th right behind Lee Rowland and Josh Monsrud. I knew I had plenty of time to make the passes and didn’t want to rush anything and end up on the ground again. I just waited for some mistakes and made the moves. I was 6th on the second lap. I continued to ride hard and ended up 4th at the finish and 34th overall! I was definitely happy with 4th. I’m now sitting 3rd in the points because of my consistency.

Thanks again to ProMotoBillet/Fastway, Moose Racing, Beechmont Motorsports, Johnny Signs, SixSixOne, and IMS.
